Get out of your driveway and go to the playground. Why you will never be a good player if you stay in your yard. Many of the young (High School) players that I see today think that just because they shoot 200 shots in their driveway or backyard and then play one on one against their best friend, that they are "good" basketball players. Then they play in a real game and they can't score a point. They have the nerve to get mad and wonder why. The reason that they don't get better is simple, you do not play against your friends in a real game. You play against other players who could care less about who you are, where you are from, or how many times you beat your friend one on one in your yard. The players on the other team just want to beat you. There is no "friendship" when you step on to the court. Once you step between the lines, it is a competition. There will be one winner and one loser, it is that simple. When you play against someone you know, there is no real competition. If you lose, you can play again with no hard feelings. When you play against players who you don't know, it becomes personal, a "pride" issue. Moreover, one gets a feeling of comfort when playing against a familiar face. There is no real competition when playing against a friend. You can play easy or intense, and it doesn't really matter. When you play against other people, you can not let down for a second or you will lose. That is what basketball is all about, not letting down and losing. You want to win during the season, right? Well, play against the kind of players that you will face during the season, the ones you do not know, that way you will be ready for it. I can tell you this, you will not play against your friends during the season, so stop practicing against them. Go play somewhere new. Somewhere that you do not know a single person on the court, except the players that you may have brought to play on your team. You have to play against as many players as possible so that you can adapt to different environments and styles of play. That is how you will become a good player, not by playing in your yard.
